Fake OTPs, AI voice scams, job frauds, and payment tricks are targeting more Indians than ever before
WhatsApp is one of the most widely used apps in India, with millions of people using it every day for chatting, business, payments, and sharing information. Because so many people trust messages received on WhatsApp, scammers are increasingly using the platform to trick users into losing money or personal data.
Cybercrime experts say that WhatsApp scams have become more common in recent years. Many people receive suspicious messages, unknown calls, fake payment requests, and dangerous links without realizing they are being targeted.
One of the most common WhatsApp scams in India involves fake OTP requests. Scammers often call or message users pretending to be from a bank, courier company, or customer care service.
If the victim shares the OTP, the scammer may gain access to the person’s bank account, WhatsApp account, or payment wallet.
AI voice scams are becoming a major threat. In these scams, criminals use artificial intelligence to copy someone’s voice. They may call a person pretending to be a family member asking for urgent money.
These calls can sound very real, which is why many people panic and transfer money immediately.
Many WhatsApp users are also receiving fake job offers. These messages promise high salaries, work-from-home opportunities, or easy money for liking videos or reviewing products.
Victims are often asked to pay registration fees or share bank details. After the payment is made, the scammer disappears.
Some scammers send fake payment screenshots to shop owners, freelancers, or sellers. They claim that they have already paid through UPI or bank transfer.
Scammers often send links that look like prize offers, free recharge deals, or fake government schemes. Some links ask users to download APK files.
These files may contain malware that can steal passwords, bank details, photos, or even take control of the phone.
WhatsApp scams are becoming smarter and more dangerous, especially with the use of AI tools and fake identities. Staying alert is the best way to protect yourself and your family.
Before trusting any message, ask yourself whether it feels urgent, unusual, or too good to be true. If something feels suspicious, it is better to ignore it than risk losing money or personal information.
