Nothing OS 5.0 is now attracting attention from smartphone users after Nothing began rolling out the stable version of its new software to the Nothing Phone (3). The update is based on Android 17 and brings a refreshed design, more home screen customisation, improved performance and changes to the company's Essential AI tools. Nothing announced the general release on October 12, 2026, with availability being introduced in stages rather than reaching every phone at the same time.

The update follows a period of open beta testing that began in August. During that period, users and developers had an opportunity to try the new features and provide feedback. The stable release brings the wider Nothing OS 5.0 experience to eligible Phone (3) users, although the exact time an individual device receives the update can depend on the region and rollout schedule. Nothing has also published a roadmap for other supported models.

One of the biggest changes is the refreshed interface. Nothing has updated typography, icons, spacing, animations and layouts across areas such as Settings, Camera, Gallery and the status bar. The company is continuing its distinctive visual style while making the interface feel more consistent. The updated Geist typeface gives system screens a cleaner appearance, and the revised animations are intended to make common actions feel smoother.

The home screen receives more personalisation options. Users can choose colours that adapt to their wallpaper, use tinted app icons and customise the appearance of supported widgets. This means the home screen can look more coordinated without requiring users to install a separate launcher. The update also introduces additional clock face designs, including Gooey and Micrographics, giving users more ways to change the look of the lock screen.

Widgets are another part of the redesign. Nothing has introduced new ways to display useful information and personal content directly on the home screen. The Micrographics clock face uses a compact, information-focused design, while Collector lets users turn favourite photos into stickers and build a collection of people, places and things that inspire them. The aim is to make personalisation more useful rather than simply changing the wallpaper or app icons.

Nothing OS 5.0 also makes changes to the Glyph experience on compatible phones. A dedicated Glyph app brings lighting and sound controls together in one place, making it easier to manage the phone's rear light interface. The Glyph Timer can be started directly from the home screen, which is useful for short tasks, study sessions or reminders. The exact Glyph functions available depend on the hardware of the phone being used.

Performance is another major focus. Nothing says the software improves app launches, scrolling, touch response and multitasking. Memory management has also been refined to reduce unnecessary app reloads. These changes are designed to make the phone feel more responsive during everyday use. Actual results can vary according to the model, the apps installed, available storage and how the device is used.

Because Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17, it also includes platform-level changes. One important addition is the option to separate Notifications and Quick Settings into different panels. Users can access notifications independently from system controls such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This gives the notification shade a different layout and may make frequently used settings easier to reach.

Quick Share has also received attention. The updated sharing experience supports sharing files with nearby Android devices and using a QR code to allow an iPhone or another device to access a secure web link. This is intended to make transferring files between different platforms easier. Users should still check the receiving device's compatibility and follow the prompts shown on screen when sharing files.

Privacy controls are another part of the Android 17 experience. Updated permission controls and privacy indicators help users understand when apps are accessing sensitive features such as the camera, microphone or location. The software also includes improvements to screen recording, Dark Theme support, HDR viewing and other system functions. Availability of individual features can vary depending on the device and software configuration.

Nothing is also improving its Essential AI tools. The company has been developing features that help users organise information and work with content captured on their phones. Some Essential Space changes are being delivered separately through Google Play, so not every feature will necessarily appear immediately after installing the operating system. Essential Apps Builder is also being introduced gradually, with access dependent on the company's rollout and availability arrangements.

For users who want to install the update, the first step is to open Settings, select System and then choose System update. The phone can check whether a software update is available for that device. If the update is not displayed, it does not necessarily mean something is wrong. The rollout is staggered, and a phone may receive the update later than another device of the same model.

Nothing's published rollout plan lists the Phone (3) as the first device receiving the stable release in October. The Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro, along with the Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro, are scheduled for early November. The Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus are listed for mid-November, while the Phone (3a) Lite is planned for late December. The Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro are listed for mid-January 2027. These are indicative timelines and may change.

Not every Nothing phone will receive Nothing OS 5.0. According to the company's published information, the original Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support and are not eligible for this version. Owners of these devices should check official support information rather than relying on unofficial downloads or claims that the update can be installed normally.

Before installing any major update, it is sensible to back up important photos, contacts, documents and other files. Users should also ensure the phone has enough free storage and battery power. If an update is offered, reading the installation notes can help identify any known issues or requirements. Avoid downloading unofficial system packages from unknown websites, as they may create security risks or cause the phone to stop working correctly.

Overall, Nothing OS 5.0 is a substantial software update for supported Nothing phones. Its main attractions are the refreshed design, expanded home screen options, improved Glyph controls, performance refinements and Android 17 features. The Phone (3) is first in line for the stable release, while other eligible models are expected to follow according to the company's published schedule. Users should check the update screen and Nothing's official website for the latest information about their specific device.
